Deconstructing monuments to speculate lost histories
The Monument of the Unknown Naval Soldier is situated in Alexandria, Egypt. The monument contains a rich history from being built by Italian immigrants in the early 19th century to being a symbol of naval power and then transformed into a memorial after the 1952 revolution to commemorate fallen Egyptian naval soldiers. Apart from this information, any detailed accounts are absent regarding when exactly it was built and how it was perceived by the people of Egypt before the 1952 Revolution. Using themes of fragmentation, adaption and connection the monument is reconstructed using the methods of Photo-modelling, projecting, tracing, folding, distorting, slicing, combining, overlaying and collaging to talk about the absence of information regarding the monument’s history and proposing a reconfiguration of elements to speculate the suggestive complex history behind it.
